From the Vision to the Noose
A true 1840's Cornish story of murder and intrigue
by Jill Batters
An amiable, and much respected local merchant is murdered one night during a suspected highway robbery on the road between Bodmin and Wadebridge
A London detective is brought down to the tightly-knit Cornish community with instrutions to 'Solve the case and ensure that a culprit is found and hanged'.
With one victim, and a story that eventually leads to three women being widowed, eleven children being made fatherless, and several families left devastated, it is small wonder that over 170 years later echoes still reverberate around this area.
But why do feelings still run so deep? Maybe because this is not just another murder case, for as this tragedy unfolds, we find, woven within the intrigue, another quite different story.
------------------------------------------
This is a story of life in mid-19th century Cornwall which also tells, for the first time, the full story of one of Cornwall's most famous murders. In her debut book, Jill Batters has brought to life the human interest story of the murder of Nevell Norway by the Lightfoot brothers, William and James.
The story twists and turns like a Cornish lane and the signposts at the crossroads are perplexing. Side roads may beckon as they try and lure you away, and a snake or two may cross your path; but this journey is no challenging walk on an unfamiliar road; this is a frightening gallop on horseback.
The majority of the locations mentioned in the book can be visited or seen to this day, many of which still retain their character from that period. This is an accurately researched book that makes first class reading.
The victim of this murder, Nevell Norway, was in fact the Great-Grandfather of the famous novelist Nevill Shute, whose real name was Nevill Shute Norway.
